Overview

The CBCS Administrative Medical Specialist with Medical Billing and Coding is geared towards students who are interested in obtaining a career in the healthcare industry, but have little to no experience within the sector.

This comprehensive program will provide a foundation of medical vocabulary, to help you better understand doctors’ notes and medical record contents. It will also teach you essential medical office management skills that healthcare managers look for when hiring new front office staff. 

Upon completion of this program, you will be prepared to sit for the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam and the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam, offered by National Healthcareer Association (NHA). The registration fees for both exams are included with this program.

This program will also prepare you to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam and the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam.

You will learn to function as an important member of the healthcare team by providing key skills such as patient registration and scheduling, medical records management, diagnostic and procedural coding, insurance claim filing, third-party guidelines and daily financial practices.

In Medical Terminology, you will learn the “language of medicine” and study the disorders and medical procedures common to each body system.

  • Safeguard patient confidentiality in the computerized medical office, discover the importance of the medical record, and learn the ambulatory use of the electronic medical record
  • Recognize the contents of the medical record, including SOAP notes, consultations, discharge summaries and operative reports and distinguish what makes them accurate and complete
  • Navigate different types of patient scheduling systems
  • Adhere to legal concepts, such as advance directive, living will, power of attorney, and guardianship, as well as know the HIPAA Privacy Rule and the HIPAA Security Rule
  • Recognize the implications of health insurance fraud and abuse
  • Assign accurate codes from the ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding manuals
  • Abstract diagnoses and procedures from medical records and develop an insurance claim
  • Know the word parts, structures, and functions of the human body
  • Learn disorders and medical procedures common to each body system
