In this online program, you will gain the skills and knowledge to prepare yourself to become an optician and prepare for the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certification —a certification that’s required by many states. You will learn how to read prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses, become familiar with the equipment opticians use, and gain an understanding of eye anatomy and eye diseases, as well as learn various office responsibilities within an optometrist’s office, including: bookkeeping; tracking inventory and sales; maintaining customer records (including payments and prescriptions). Upon completion of this program you will:
- Be qualified to obtain an entry-level position as an optician in a retail or medical setting. (Some states require ABO certification.)
- Be prepared to take the ABO exam, if you have a high school degree or GED.
- Be knowledgeable about ocular anatomy, eye diseases and conditions, frame styling and adjustment, eyewear selection, glasses lens and contact lens selection, prescriptions, and the equipment and mathematical formulas used in opticianry.
- Create, edit, format, and print Microsoft Word documents
- Learn advanced formatting, drawing tools, create and manage tables, and work with column layouts
- Learn working with tables of contents, footnotes, and endnotes, adding comments, tracking changes, comparing and combining documents, creating envelopes and labels, using Mail Merge, and protecting documents.
- Create, modify, and format Excel worksheets, perform calculations, and print Excel workbooks.
- Learn to use advanced Excel formulas, work with lists, work with illustrations and charts, and use advanced formatting techniques.
- Learn to work with pivot tables, audit worksheets, work with data tools, protect documents for collaboration with others, and work with macros.
- Understand basic bookkeeping and accounting concepts
- Gain familiarity with closing the books and generating basic financial statements

Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites to take this course. However a high school diploma or GED is required to take the ABO exam.
Dr. Beverly Smith is a Doctor of Optometry and has been in private practice for more than 24 years. She also holds a Master of Business Administration and founded a consulting firm that helps new practitioners start and manage their own eye care practices. Throughout her career, Smith has taught many future opticians, certified paraoptometrics, and fellow optometrists. Her work has been published in the professional journals New O.D. and Women in Optometry.
Wade Lindenberger is a CPA with over 20 years of financial accounting and management experience in public accounting and private industry. He is currently Director of Finance and Administration for New Children's Museum. Before his current position, he worked as the National Finance and Accounting Service Line Leader for Premier Alliance Group, a national professional services firm. Wade was also Director of the Finance and Accounting service line for the San Diego office of a global, publicly held professional services firm. Before becoming a consultant, Wade was Divisional Controller for one of the leading health and fitness club chains in the world. He has also been Internal Audit Manager and Divisional Controller for a division of a Fortune 500 global energy project management company. He began his career with Coopers & Lybrand, predecessor to PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the "Big Four" CPA firms. He has previously served as an instructor for courses at Coopers & Lybrand and at the University of California at San Diego for the Extension Course and is currently an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego School of Business. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Bookkeepers' Advisory Board.
Tracy Berry has been a senior graphic designer/programmer, instructor, and consultant since 1993 and has developed hundreds of logos, marketing materials, websites, and multimedia solutions for customers worldwide. She was also involved in several large corporate software rollouts. She has helped many organizations optimize and streamline data solutions. She teaches both onsite and online courses and has her CTT (Certified Technical Trainer) certification. Tracy specializes in teaching graphics, desktop publishing, web design, and reporting/productivity applications.

programs if I am an
international student?
Yes, because ed2go programs are online you never have to actually
travel to
the school. Most schools offer telephone

take to complete a
program?
All of our programs are self-paced and open enrollment, so you can
start
them when you want and finish them at your own pace.
When you register, you’ll receive eighteen
(18) months to complete the program.

enough time to
complete my program within the time frame provided?

time allotted to complete your program has been calculated based on
the number of hours for each program, so don't worry too much about not
completing in time. If, after a concerted effort, you are still unable

complete, your Student Advisor will help you work out a suitable

What software or
hardware do I need in
order to take online programs and what are the system requirements?
In
order to take our online programs, you must have access to a computer
and the Internet. You can access the
program contents from any Web-enabled computer.
You don’t have to use the same computer to log-in to the program
every
time. We recommend that you have a
word-processing program (Microsoft Word is the best) and the latest
version of
Internet Explorer.

Can I use a Mac?
The
Optician Certification program can be taken on a PC or
a
Mac. The Bookkeeping portion of this
course can be taken on either an IBM-compatible computer (PC) or a Mac.
The
QuickBooks content can be taken on an IBM-compatible computer (PC). If
you use a Mac, you must purchase the Mac version of the software,
although some
of the screen shots within the content may differ. Microsoft Word 2016
and
Excel 2016 can
only be taken on a PC; it is not Mac compatible.
