Optional Pathways for Professional Phlebotomy Technician Certification

Completion of the academic content of the program will earn you a Certificate of Completion for the Professional Phlebotomy Technician program. To become certified, you must successfully pass one of the certifications (AECA or NHA) by following one of the pathways shown below.

**Please Note: You are responsible for securing a clinical location for your externship. Once you have found an externship location suitable to your needs, the externship specialist at ed2go may support you in next steps. It is strongly recommended that you have secured a clinical location prior to starting the course.

Pathway Options:

(A) AECA Provisional Certification

American Education Certificate Association (AECA)

This option is for students with no medical field experience or who have notable time constraints. Students new to the medical field are strongly recommended to secure a clinical site pre-course registration. This option gives students more time to complete all steps and requirements in order to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician Specialist (CPTS).

Pros of choice (A) include:

  1. Taking pathway choice (A) is a way to obtain a provisional certification while working to fulfill the required live sticks.
  2. Allows a student more time to study for the certification exam.
  3. Provides less pressure to balance all responsibilities inside and outside of coursework due to extended time between exam and clinical completion.

This option is best if a student does not have any prior medical field or related experience.

(B) NHA Professional Certification

National Health Association (NHA)

This option is great for students already working in the medical field with established career connections making clinical certification requirements easy to complete for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).

Pros of choice (B) include:

  1. Choosing pathway choice (B) is a way to obtain certification to further their career opportunities.
  2. NHA may be a more widely recognized certification and is preferred by some employers or regions.

This pathway allows students to use already established professional connections.
