Overview

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has established minimum training standards for individuals applying for their Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) for the first time. If you are interested in obtaining your Class B CDL, you are subject to the entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements. This Class B CDL theory course was created in collaboration with an approved training provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR) and must be completed for a driver to be eligible to take the state Class B CDL exam administered by the state.

This Class B CDL training course is designed for Class B commercial motor vehicle drivers who are seeking a CDL and intended to only meet all theory (knowledge) requirements listed in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 CFR Part 380, Special Training Requirements. This includes sections covering basic operation, safe operating procedures, advanced operating practices, vehicle systems and reporting malfunctions, and non-driving activities.

Upon completion of this online course, our system will automatically upload your ELDT records to the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) TPR. You can take your state's CDL test upon completing other federal training requirements, such as behind-the-wheel training. Those who successfully take the CDL test will be issued a state CDL and may be eligible to be hired by companies that operate Class B trucks in commerce.

Note: There are no refunds or transfers for this course. This course is excluded from ed2go standard refund and transfer policies. Once access to the course is provided, no refunds or transfers will be allowed. This course includes the required ELDT theory exams for each of the units.; it does NOT include the behind-the-wheel training, cost of the CDL test, or other state exam charges.

Please note: Students in Virginia should be aware that online training for any of ELDT's offerings is not permitted in this state. This course will not be recognized for you.

What you will learn

Basic Operation: Teaches the interaction between driver-trainees and the CMV, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), introduction to the basic CMV instruments and controls, basic operating characteristics of a CMV, vehicle inspections, controlling the motion of CMVs under various road and traffic conditions, and employing shifting and backing techniques for CMVs
Safe Operating Procedures: Teaches driver-trainees the practices required for the safe operation of the heavy vehicle on the highway under various road, weather, and traffic conditions
Advanced Operating Practices: Teaches driver-trainees about the advanced skills necessary to recognize potential hazards and handle a CMV when faced with a hazard
Vehicle Systems and Reporting Malfunctions: Teaches driver-trainees the vehicle and its systems and subsystems, vehicle inspection, operation, and maintenance, and the impact of those factors upon highway safety and operational efficiency
Non-Driving Activities: Teaches driver-trainees the activities that do not involve actually operating the CMV, such as cargo handling, environmental issues, driver hours of service, post-crash procedures, drugs and alcohol, and trip planning

What is the refund and transfer policy for this ELDT training course?

This course does not fall under the ed2go standard refund or transfer policies. Once access to the course is provided, no refunds or transfers will be allowed.

What is a Class B license?

A Class B commercial driver's license is required to operate any single vehicle that is not hitched to a trailer. For example, commercial trucks with an attached cab and cargo area with a combined weight greater than 26,000 pounds and trucks with a detached towed cargo vehicle that weighs less than 10,000 pounds.

What can I drive with a Class B CDL?

With your Class B CDL, you can drive straight trucks, large buses (city buses, tourist buses, and school buses), segmented buses, box trucks (including delivery trucks and furniture trucks), dump trucks with small trailers, and some Class C vehicles with the correct endorsements.

Endorsements include Passenger (P), allowing you to carry passengers, Tank (T), allowing you to drive trucks containing liquid cargo, and H (Hazardous Materials), allowing you to drive trucks containing such hazardous materials as flammable liquids, explosives, or radioactive substances.

To obtain an endorsement, you will need to pass a specialized knowledge exam and possibly a specialized driving skills test. To obtain an H, P, or School Bus (S) endorsement, you must successfully complete training from FMCSA-approved training providers. You must also undergo a thorough background check to obtain an S endorsement.

How long does it take to complete this course?

After you register, you will receive 3 months to complete the course. The time allotted for completion has been calculated based on the number of course hours.

What if I don't have enough time to complete the course within the time frame provided?

The time allotted for course completion has been calculated based on the number of course hours. However, if you are unable to complete the course, contact the student advising team to see what options you may have available to work out a suitable completion date. Please note that an extension fee may be charged.
